John 20:29-31

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

3Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

This moment comes right after Thomas finally sees the risen Jesus. Thomas had doubted. He had said he would not believe unless he could physically see and touch Jesus for himself. And Jesus meets him right there. Not with rejection, but with an invitation. Then Jesus speaks a truth that stretches far beyond Thomas and lands directly on us. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. That is where we live. We have not physically seen Jesus, yet we are called to believe fully.

This is not blind faith. It is informed, grounded, and rooted in truth. The disciples saw Jesus, walked with Him, and witnessed His resurrection. Their testimony became the foundation for our belief. When Jesus speaks about those who believe without seeing, He is affirming the faith of future believers. He is pointing to us. Faith is not about needing constant proof. It is about trusting in the truth of who Jesus is based on what has already been revealed.

John then shifts and explains why he wrote his Gospel in the first place. This is one of the clearest purpose statements in all of Scripture. He says that Jesus did many other signs that are not even recorded. Think about that. What we have in Scripture is not everything Jesus did. It is a carefully chosen collection of signs and moments that reveal who He is. Every miracle, every teaching, every interaction was intentional.

The goal of those recorded signs is belief. Not just intellectual agreement, but deep, life-changing belief that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. This is not just a title. This is identity. To believe that Jesus is the Christ means recognizing Him as the promised Messiah, the One sent by God to redeem and restore. To believe He is the Son of God is to acknowledge His divine nature, His authority, and His power.

And then comes the result of that belief. That by believing, you may have life in His name. This is not just eternal life later. This is real, present, abundant life now. Life that is anchored in truth, filled with purpose, and sustained by Christ. Belief is not just a mental decision. It is the doorway into a completely different kind of life.

So this passage challenges us in two ways. First, it asks us to examine our faith. Do we believe even when we cannot see? And second, it reminds us that Scripture is enough. Everything we need to know Jesus, trust Him, and follow Him has been given to us. We are called to believe, and in that belief, we find life.

Word Study

  • Blessed – Deep joy and spiritual favor from God
  • Believe – To trust fully, not just acknowledge
  • Signs – Miracles pointing to who Jesus is
  • Christ – The Messiah, the promised Savior
  • Son of God – Divine identity and authority of Jesus
  • Life – True life, both now and eternal

Verse Map (Do This in Your Bible)

  • Underline “have not seen and yet have believed”
  • Circle “blessed”
  • Underline “these are written”
  • Box “believe that Jesus is the Christ”
  • Highlight “Son of God”
  • Star “life in His name”

Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus calls those who believe without seeing “blessed”?
  • What does true belief look like beyond just knowing facts about Jesus?
  • How do the “signs” in Scripture strengthen your faith today?
  • What does it mean to have life in His name right now, not just later?
  • Where do you struggle to trust God without seeing the full picture?

Life Application

Stop waiting for proof before you trust God. He has already given you everything you need in His Word. Choose to believe today, even in the areas where you cannot see what He is doing yet.

Devotional

I think this one hits me because I am such a “show me” kind of person sometimes. I want to see what God is doing, understand the plan, and know how everything is going to work out. And when I cannot see it, that is when my mind starts going in a million directions. I start questioning, wondering, and honestly just feeling a little unsettled. It is so easy to slip into that place where faith feels harder because I cannot physically see the outcome.

But this verse gently reminds me that this is exactly where faith lives. Not in what I can see, but in what I choose to believe. There have been so many moments in my life where I did not see what God was doing at all, especially in the hardest seasons, and yet He was working the whole time. Looking back, I can see His hand all over it. And that gives me confidence now. I may not see it today, but I know He is still moving. And that kind of faith… that is where real life is found.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your Word and for the truth it reveals about who You are. Help me to believe even when I cannot see, and to trust You fully in every area of my life. Strengthen my faith, remind me of Your faithfulness, and help me to rest in the life that comes from knowing You. Amen.
