Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged,

for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

God is speaking directly to Joshua in a moment of transition. Moses is gone. Leadership has shifted. The responsibility is heavy. And what does God say? Not “good luck.” Not “figure it out.” He says, Have I not commanded you? This is not a suggestion. Courage is not optional for someone walking in obedience. When God calls you, He also commands you to stand firm in that calling.

Be strong and courageous. That phrase is repeated multiple times in this chapter, and that repetition matters. God knows human nature. He knows we lean toward fear, doubt, and insecurity when things feel big. Strength here is not about personality or confidence in yourself. It is about reliance on God. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to move forward in obedience even when fear is present.

Then God addresses fear directly. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Fear paralyzes. Discouragement drains. One stops you before you begin, the other makes you want to quit halfway through. God is covering both ends. He is saying do not let fear keep you from stepping out, and do not let discouragement pull you back once you have started.

And here is the reason everything changes. For the Lord your God will be with you. That is the foundation of the command. God does not just tell Joshua to be brave and leave him alone. His presence is the source of Joshua’s strength. This is not self-help motivation. This is divine assurance. The same God who called him is the same God who walks with him.

Wherever you go. That means there is no place outside of God’s presence. Not in the unknown. Not in the hard conversations. Not in the moments where you feel completely unqualified. God is not limited to certain seasons or situations. His presence is constant, steady, and faithful.

This verse is not just for Joshua. It is a principle for every believer. When God calls you into something, whether it is a new season, a hard decision, or a step of obedience, you will feel the weight of it. But the command remains the same. Be strong. Be courageous. Not because you feel ready, but because God is with you.

Discussion Questions

  • What is something in your life right now that requires courage from you?
  • Do you tend to struggle more with fear before starting or discouragement after starting?
  • How would your situation change if you truly believed God is with you in it?

Life Application

Today, take one step of obedience in something you have been avoiding out of fear or discouragement. Do not wait until you feel ready. Move forward knowing God is with you. Let your obedience be bigger than your fear.

Devotional

There have been moments in my life where I felt completely unqualified for what was in front of me. Moments where I wanted to shrink back, stay comfortable, and avoid the weight of stepping into something new. And if I am honest, it was never really about the situation. It was about fear. Fear of failing, fear of not being enough, fear of getting it wrong. But this verse reminds me that God never asked me to be fearless. He asked me to be faithful.

You might be standing in front of something right now that feels too big for you. Something that makes your stomach turn a little because you know it is going to require more from you than you feel like you have. But here is the truth. You are not walking into it alone. The same God who called you is going with you. And that changes everything. You do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to take the next step with Him.

Prayer

Lord, help me to be strong and courageous in the places where I feel weak and afraid. Remind me that You are with me in every step I take. Give me the courage to obey You even when it feels hard. I trust that You will lead me and sustain me wherever I go. Amen.
