Daily Bible Thump 5/2/26

Mark 5:36 (NIV)

“Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’”

This moment happens in the middle of chaos, not calm. Jairus, a synagogue leader, had come to Jesus desperate because his daughter was dying. Jesus agrees to go with him, but on the way, they get interrupted by the woman with the issue of blood. While Jesus is still speaking to her, people arrive with devastating news. Jairus’ daughter is dead. They basically tell him not to bother Jesus anymore. In their minds, the situation has moved from serious to impossible. And right there, before fear can fully take over Jairus’ heart, Jesus steps in with just a few words that completely shift the moment.

“Don’t be afraid.” That sounds simple, but it is anything but. Jairus had every reason to be afraid. The worst-case scenario had just happened. The thing he feared most had become reality. And yet Jesus addresses fear immediately because fear has a way of shutting down faith. When fear takes over, we stop trusting, stop hoping, and start spiraling. Jesus was not dismissing the reality of the situation. He was redirecting Jairus’ focus. Fear looks at circumstances. Faith looks at Christ. Those two cannot lead at the same time.

Then Jesus says, “just believe.” That word “just” almost feels too small for the weight it carries. He is not saying belief is easy. He is saying belief is the only thing that matters in this moment. Not logic, not opinions, not what other people are saying. Just believe. Believe that Jesus is who He says He is. Believe that His power is not limited by what looks final to us. This is not blind faith. This is faith placed in the One who has authority over sickness, over death, and over every impossible situation.

Notice something important here. Jesus speaks over Jairus before Jairus even has a chance to respond to the bad news. That tells us Jesus is always ahead of our fear. He does not wait for us to spiral completely out of control before He steps in. He meets us right in the moment where fear is trying to take root. That is grace. That is compassion. He knows how fragile we are, how quickly we can lose hope, and He speaks truth right into that space.

Also, Jesus does not explain Himself. He does not give Jairus a step-by-step plan or a theological breakdown. He gives him a command. Don’t be afraid. Believe. Sometimes we want answers when what we really need is trust. We want details when Jesus is calling us to dependence. Faith is not always having clarity. It is choosing to trust even when you do not understand what is happening or why things are unfolding the way they are.

And what happens next proves everything Jesus said. He goes to Jairus’ house, takes the girl by the hand, and raises her from the dead. What everyone else declared as finished, Jesus reversed completely. That is the power behind the words “just believe.” It is not about the strength of Jairus’ faith. It is about the object of his faith. Jesus is the difference. When your faith is placed in Him, even the most hopeless situations are not beyond His reach.

Word Study

  • Afraid (phobeo): To be terrified, alarmed, or controlled by fear.
  • Believe (pisteuo): To trust, rely on, and place confidence in. Not just mental agreement, but full dependence.
  • Just (monon): Only, alone. Meaning nothing else matters in this moment but faith in Jesus.

Verse Map (Do This In Your Bible)

  • Circle: “Don’t be afraid”
  • Underline: “just believe”
  • Box: “Jesus told him”
  • Draw a line between: “afraid” → “believe”
  • Write in margin: “Fear speaks. Jesus overrides.”

Discussion Questions

  • What situation in your life right now is trying to pull you into fear instead of faith?
  • What does “just believe” look like in a practical, everyday sense for you?
  • How can you respond differently the next time fear starts to take over?

Devotional

Fear has a loud voice. It shows up uninvited and starts telling you everything that could go wrong, everything that feels lost, everything that looks final. And if you listen long enough, it will convince you that hope is gone and there is nothing left to do. Jairus stood in that exact place. He heard the words no parent ever wants to hear. It was over. Done. Too late. And right in that moment, Jesus spoke something stronger than the fear trying to take over his heart.

“Don’t be afraid; just believe.” That was not just a suggestion. That was an invitation to trust beyond what he could see. And that same invitation is extended to you. Not when everything makes sense, not when the outcome looks promising, but right in the middle of the mess, the uncertainty, and the heartbreak. Faith is not pretending things are fine. It is choosing to trust Jesus even when they are not.

Life Application

The next time fear hits, pause and recognize it for what it is. Then intentionally shift your focus to Jesus. Speak truth over yourself. Remind yourself who He is and what He is capable of. Choose belief, even if it feels small. Faith does not have to be loud to be real. It just has to be directed at the right Person.

Prayer

Lord, You see the places in my life where fear tries to take over. Help me to trust You in those moments instead of giving in to fear. Strengthen my faith, remind me of who You are, and teach me to believe even when things feel impossible. I choose to trust You. Amen.
