Romans 5:1–2

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

Romans chapter 5 is one of those places in Scripture where Paul slows everything down and reminds believers what salvation actually gave us. So many Christians walk around carrying guilt, fear, shame, anxiety, and constant pressure to “earn” God’s love when Jesus already finished the work at the cross. Paul says we have been “justified by faith.” That word justified means declared righteous. Not improved a little. Not put on probation. Declared righteous before a holy God because of Jesus Christ. That is massive. The enemy loves to convince believers they are still enemies of God, but Romans 5 says the exact opposite. Through Christ, we now have peace with God. The war is over. The debt has been paid. The relationship has been restored.

Paul also reminds us that this peace only comes “through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Not through church attendance. Not through being a good person. Not through trying harder. Salvation is completely centered on Jesus. Christianity is not about self improvement. It is about rescue. We could never climb our way to God, so Christ came down to us. The cross was not just a symbol of love. It was the place where wrath and mercy met together. Jesus took the punishment we deserved so we could stand forgiven before God. That is why believers can live with confidence instead of fear.

Verse 2 says we now have “access by faith into this grace wherein we stand.” In the Old Testament, access to God was limited. There were veils, sacrifices, priests, and separation because of sin. But because of Jesus, believers now have direct access to the Father. Think about how incredible that is. You do not have to beg God to tolerate you. You are welcomed into His presence through Christ. Grace is not just something that saved you years ago. Grace is where you stand every single day. When you fail, grace is there. When you feel weak, grace is there. When you are exhausted, overwhelmed, grieving, or confused, grace is still there holding you up.

Paul says believers can “rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Biblical hope is not wishful thinking. It is confident expectation. The world’s hope says, “Maybe things will work out.” Biblical hope says, “God promised it, so I know it is coming.” One day every believer will stand face to face with Christ fully redeemed, fully restored, and finally home. No more sin. No more death. No more anxiety. No more heartbreak. Romans 5 reminds us that the Christian life is not built on uncertainty. It is built on the finished work of Jesus and the promises of God.

One thing people often miss in these verses is the word “stand.” Paul says this grace is “wherein we stand.” The Christian life is not supposed to be lived constantly falling apart spiritually every time circumstances change. Our emotions move. Our situations change. People disappoint us. Life hurts sometimes. But grace remains steady. The believer stands on Christ like a solid rock. That means even during seasons of grief, fear, sickness, confusion, or spiritual warfare, we are still secure in Him. Your salvation is not hanging by a thread held together by your own strength. It is held by Jesus Himself.

Romans 5 also completely destroys pride. If we are justified by faith, then nobody gets to brag. Nobody stands before God saying, “Look how amazing I was.” Every believer comes to the cross the exact same way: broken, sinful, and desperate for mercy. That should produce humility, gratitude, and compassion toward others. Christians should be the most thankful people on earth because we know exactly what we were rescued from. We were enemies of God, yet Christ made peace through His blood. That truth should change the way we worship, pray, forgive, and love others.

Word Study

Justified

Declared righteous before God. A legal term meaning the believer has been fully pardoned and accepted because of Christ.

Discussion Questions

  • What does it truly mean to have peace with God?
  • Why is salvation by faith alone so important to the gospel?
  • How does knowing you stand in grace change the way you handle failure and weakness?

Life Application

A lot of believers live as though God is constantly angry with them, waiting for them to mess up again. Romans 5 reminds us that if we belong to Christ, we are no longer enemies trying to earn acceptance. We are forgiven children standing in grace. That does not make us careless about sin. It makes us grateful for mercy. Today, stop carrying guilt Jesus already paid for. Stop trying to earn what Christ freely gave. Walk in peace knowing your relationship with God was secured at the cross.

Devotional

Some days life feels heavy. Your mind races, your heart hurts, and the enemy whispers that you are failing God again. But Romans 5 pulls us back to the foundation. If your faith is in Christ, you already have peace with God. Not because you had a perfect week. Not because your emotions feel strong. Not because you prayed enough or read enough chapters today. You have peace because Jesus shed His blood for you. The cross was enough then and it is still enough now.

There is something deeply comforting about knowing we stand in grace. Not visit grace occasionally. Not borrow grace temporarily. Stand in it. Like standing inside a fortress while the storm rages outside. The world may shake. People may fail you. Your own emotions may betray you sometimes. But the grace of God does not move. And because of that, believers can rejoice with hope knowing the story ends in glory with Christ.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the peace that comes through Jesus Christ alone. Thank You that salvation is not based on my performance but on the finished work of the cross. Help me to stand firmly in Your grace and walk in confidence instead of fear. Remind me daily that I am forgiven, loved, and secure in You. Fill my heart with hope and help me reflect Your mercy to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
