Colossians 1:17
“And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
When Paul wrote these words to the church in Colossae, he was combating false teachings that diminished the identity and authority of Jesus Christ. Some were attempting to place Jesus alongside other spiritual beings or treat Him as merely one part of God’s plan. Paul responds by lifting Christ to His rightful place. In the verses surrounding Colossians 1:17, Paul declares that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the Creator of all things, and the One through whom and for whom all things were made. This verse is a powerful reminder that Jesus is not simply part of creation. He is Lord over creation.
The phrase “He is before all things” speaks of Christ’s eternal existence. Before the first sunrise, before the stars filled the heavens, before the foundations of the earth were laid, Jesus was. He did not come into existence at Bethlehem. He has existed from eternity past as God the Son. This truth should fill believers with confidence because it means our Savior is not limited by time, circumstances, or human understanding. The One who saved us is the same One who has always been and always will be. Everything in our lives changes, but Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The second half of the verse may be even more remarkable: “in Him all things hold together.” Jesus did not simply create the universe and then step away from it. He actively sustains it every moment of every day. Every planet remains in its orbit because of Him. Every law of nature continues because He wills it. Every heartbeat, every breath, and every second of life is ultimately dependent upon His sustaining power. Scientists can explain many of the mechanisms of creation, but Scripture reveals the One behind it all. Christ is the glue that holds the universe together.
Many Christians find it fascinating that a protein called laminin, which helps hold the tissues of the human body together, is often illustrated with a cross-like shape. While this is not a proof of Christianity or a hidden code in creation, it serves as a beautiful visual reminder of this verse. Laminin helps hold the physical body together, while Jesus holds together not only our bodies but all of creation itself. For believers, it is a powerful illustration of a greater spiritual truth: the cross of Christ stands at the center of God’s plan, and the Savior who died on that cross is the One sustaining the universe at this very moment.
This verse is also deeply personal. There are seasons when life feels like it is unraveling. Relationships become strained. Grief weighs heavily on our hearts. Finances become uncertain. Health challenges arise. Anxiety whispers that everything is falling apart. Yet Colossians 1:17 reminds us that even when life feels unstable, Christ remains completely in control. The same Lord who holds galaxies in place is fully capable of holding His children through their darkest moments. We may not always understand what He is doing, but we can trust the One who never loses His grip.
For Christians today, this verse is both a theological truth and a source of daily comfort. We serve a living Savior who is actively involved in His creation. He is not distant, indifferent, or unaware of our struggles. He sees every tear, hears every prayer, and knows every burden we carry. The One who holds all things together is also holding you. Whatever you are facing today, you can rest in the knowledge that Christ is sufficient, Christ is sovereign, and Christ is still in control.

Devotional
We often spend so much energy trying to hold everything together ourselves. We carry the weight of our families, jobs, finances, ministries, relationships, and responsibilities. Eventually we discover what God already knows: we were never meant to carry that burden alone. Colossians 1:17 reminds us that there is only One capable of holding all things together, and His name is Jesus.
Today, release whatever burden you have been trying to carry in your own strength. Lay it at the feet of Christ. The Savior who sustains the stars is more than capable of sustaining you. His hands have never slipped, His power has never weakened, and His love has never failed. Rest in Him today.
