1 Chronicles 29:17 (LSB)

“Since I know, O my God, that You try the heart and delight in uprightness, I in the integrity of my heart have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You.”

One of the things I love most about this verse is that David reminds us that God sees what nobody else can see. People can see our actions, our church attendance, our giving, our service, and even our words. But God looks beyond all of that and examines the heart. He sees our motives, our intentions, our struggles, and our desires. That can be both comforting and convicting. It’s comforting because God understands us completely. It’s convicting because we can’t hide behind appearances. David knew that what mattered most to God wasn’t the treasure being collected for the temple. What mattered most was the condition of the hearts that were giving it.

The phrase “You try the heart” means that God tests and examines what is truly inside us. Throughout Scripture we see God allowing circumstances that reveal what is already in our hearts. Trials don’t create our faith or expose our weaknesses as much as they reveal them. When life is easy, it’s simple to say we trust God. When life becomes difficult, that’s when our faith is tested and our hearts are revealed. God already knows what’s in us, but often He allows situations that help us see what is in us. Sometimes we discover stronger faith than we realized. Other times we discover areas where we still need growth. Either way, God uses those moments to draw us closer to Him.

David also says that God delights in uprightness. Think about that for a moment. The Creator of the universe takes pleasure in sincere obedience. He delights when His children choose honesty over deception, faith over fear, and obedience over compromise. God isn’t looking for flawless people because there aren’t any. David himself knew that better than most. He had experienced failures, sins, and consequences. Yet he also knew the joy of repentance and restoration. God delights in people whose hearts are turned toward Him, even when they stumble along the way. A sincere heart that continually seeks God brings Him joy.

Another beautiful truth in this verse is the word “willingly.” David gave willingly, and he rejoiced because the people gave willingly as well. God has never wanted forced worship or reluctant obedience. He desires hearts that genuinely love Him. The difference between obligation and willingness is huge. One says, “I have to.” The other says, “I get to.” When we truly understand God’s grace, our perspective changes. Prayer becomes a privilege. Worship becomes a joy. Serving others becomes an opportunity. Giving becomes an act of gratitude. God wants our hearts to be fully engaged in our relationship with Him, not simply going through the motions.

This verse also challenges us to examine our own motives. Why do we do the things we do? Do we serve so others will notice us? Do we give because we feel pressured? Do we volunteer because we feel guilty if we don’t? Or do we do these things because we genuinely love God and want to honor Him? Those are questions only we and God can answer. David understood that outward actions can look identical while the motives behind them are completely different. God sees the difference. He knows when our obedience flows from love and when it flows from pride, fear, or obligation. That’s why heart examination should be a regular part of every believer’s walk.

I also love the joy found in this passage. David wasn’t celebrating the amount that had been collected. He was celebrating what God was doing in the hearts of His people. There is something beautiful about seeing God’s people willingly respond to Him. The same is true today. Every act of kindness, every prayer offered in faith, every sacrifice made for the kingdom, every moment of obedience that nobody else sees is noticed by God. He sees the heart behind it all. That should encourage us greatly. We may never receive recognition from people, but we serve a God who sees every faithful step. Nothing done for Him with a sincere heart is ever wasted, forgotten, or overlooked.

Questions

  • What motives are driving my service to God?
  • Am I serving willingly or simply out of obligation?
  • What area of my heart needs to be surrendered to God today?

Life Application

Take a few moments today to ask God to examine your heart. Be honest with Him about your motives, fears, and struggles. Instead of focusing on what others see, focus on what God sees. Choose to serve Him from a place of love and gratitude. Remember, God is not impressed by appearances. He delights in hearts that are sincere, willing, and fully devoted to Him.

Prayer

Father, thank You for knowing us completely and loving us anyway. Search our hearts and reveal anything that does not honor You. Help us to serve You with sincerity, integrity, and joy. Give us willing hearts that desire to obey You, not because we have to, but because we love You. May our worship, service, giving, and daily lives bring delight to Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
