“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Well. Jesus certainly did not ease into this conversation.
There was no “perhaps we simply see things differently.” No carefully polished language designed to make sure nobody felt uncomfortable. Jesus looked directly at people who were rejecting the truth standing right in front of them and exposed the spiritual reality underneath their deception. Satan is a liar. He has always been a liar. And one of his greatest weapons has never been getting people to believe something obviously ridiculous—it is getting people to believe something almost true.
That is how deception works. A lie wrapped in enough truth can sound completely reasonable. “God just wants you happy.” “Follow your heart.” “Everybody does it.” “It isn’t hurting anyone.” “Times have changed.” “Surely God understands.” Some of those statements can contain pieces of truth depending on the context, which is exactly why they can become dangerous when they are used to contradict what God has actually said. Satan doesn’t need you to stop believing in God if he can simply convince you to redefine what God says.
Go all the way back to Genesis 3. The serpent didn’t walk into Eden announcing, “Hello, I’m here to destroy humanity.” He asked Eve, “Has God really said…?” There it is. The strategy hasn’t changed much. Question what God said. Twist it slightly. Make disobedience sound reasonable. Make sin look harmless. Make God’s boundaries seem restrictive. Then convince us that our own judgment is more trustworthy than His Word.
And we need to be careful here because Christians can become very good at spotting lies out there while completely ignoring the ones we have believed ourselves. We can point at culture, social media, politicians, celebrities, television, other churches, other denominations, other Christians—and meanwhile Satan has been whispering into our own lives: “You’ll never change.” “God is disappointed in you.” “Your past defines you.” “Nobody cares about you.” “You need everyone’s approval.” “You cannot handle this.” “God has forgotten you.” Those are lies too.
This is why knowing Scripture matters so much. You cannot recognize counterfeit truth very well if you barely know the real thing. A thirty-second inspirational quote with a Bible verse underneath it is not the same thing as knowing God’s Word. Sunday morning alone is not enough. Somebody else’s sermon cannot replace your own time in Scripture. A devotional cannot replace Scripture. A podcast cannot replace Scripture. And yes—even The Daily Bible Thump cannot replace Scripture. Everything someone teaches you about God should ultimately send you back to the Bible to see what God actually says.
Jesus gives us another important clue in this verse: Satan “does not stand in the truth.” Truth is not his territory. That means when we deliberately choose truth, we are refusing to fight on the enemy’s battlefield. When anxiety tells us one thing and Scripture tells us another, we return to truth. When culture says one thing and Scripture says another, we return to truth. When our emotions scream something that contradicts what God has said, we return to truth. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable narrators.
And sometimes the hardest lies to recognize are the ones we tell ourselves. “I’m just venting,” when we’re gossiping. “I’m standing for truth,” when we’re enjoying the argument. “I deserve this,” when we’re justifying sin. “That’s just how I am,” when God is calling us to change. “I prayed about it,” when we had already decided what we wanted to do. Ouch. Sometimes Satan doesn’t need to manufacture a brand-new lie because we are perfectly capable of handing ourselves one and putting a Christian-looking bow on top.
But here is the beautiful part: Jesus is the complete opposite of the father of lies. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Satan lies. Jesus is Truth. Satan deceives. Jesus reveals. Satan accuses. Jesus saves. Satan wants darkness. Jesus brings light. And the closer we walk with Christ, the easier it becomes to recognize voices, ideas, beliefs, and desires that do not sound like Him.
So today, stop asking only, “Does this sound right to me?” Ask, “Is this actually true according to God’s Word?” Those are very different questions. Your feelings can change before breakfast. Culture can change by next Tuesday. Popular opinion can flip overnight. God’s truth does not require a majority vote.
The enemy has been lying since the beginning.
God has been telling the truth for eternity.
Know His Word well enough to recognize the difference.

- How can Christians make sure they are confronting deception in their own hearts instead of only identifying it in other people?
LIFE APPLICATION
Today, identify one lie you have been believing. Maybe it concerns your worth, your future, your past, your circumstances, temptation, fear, or your relationship with God. Then find what Scripture actually says about it. Write the truth down. Read it again. Pray it. Return to it whenever the lie comes back.
Do not argue with a lie using another feeling.
Answer it with truth.
JOURNAL PROMPT
What lie have I allowed myself to believe, and what does God’s Word actually say that replaces that lie with truth?
PRAYER
Father, thank You that You are completely trustworthy and that Your Word is truth. Give me discernment to recognize deception, especially when a lie sounds reasonable or contains just enough truth to fool me. Show me the lies I have accepted about You, myself, other people, or my circumstances. Forgive me when I twist Your Word to justify what I already want instead of surrendering to what You have said. Help me know Scripture deeply so I can recognize what does not come from You. Guard my mind from deception and teach me to measure everything against Your truth. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
