“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” — Proverbs 12:25 (NIV)
Anxiety is heavy. Scripture doesn’t pretend otherwise. Proverbs 12:25 describes it as something that weighs down the heart, and anyone who has carried anxiety knows exactly what that feels like. Sometimes there is a specific reason for it, and sometimes it seems to show up before we even know what we are worried about. Our minds race ahead, imagining conversations that haven’t happened, problems that haven’t arrived, and outcomes we cannot control. Before long, we are carrying today’s responsibilities along with tomorrow’s possibilities, and our hearts become exhausted under a load God never asked us to carry alone.
What I love about this verse is that the Bible doesn’t shame the anxious person. It acknowledges the weight. God knows what worry does to us. He knows how quickly our thoughts can spiral and how something small can become enormous after we have replayed it in our minds fifty different ways. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to bring their fears, worries, and burdens to Him. First Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us. That means we are not bothering God when we come to Him with the same worry again. We can keep bringing it back to Him every single time we realize we have picked it back up.
But Proverbs 12:25 also gives us another beautiful truth: “a kind word cheers it up.” Sometimes God uses another person to lighten what feels unbearably heavy. A phone call. A text. A prayer. A reminder of Scripture. Someone simply saying, “I’m here.” We may have no idea how desperately someone needs encouragement when God puts them on our heart. The words that seem small to us might arrive at exactly the moment someone is struggling to keep their head above water. Encouragement isn’t meaningless fluff. Used wisely and truthfully, our words can be one of the ways we help carry one another’s burdens.
That also means we need to pay attention to the words we speak to ourselves. Anxiety has a vocabulary of its own: What if? I can’t handle this. Something terrible is going to happen. Everything is going to fall apart. When those thoughts begin taking over, we can answer them with what is actually true. God is with me. God knows what tomorrow holds. I only have to walk through today. I can pray before I panic. I can ask for help. I can remind myself of what Scripture says instead of treating every fearful thought as though it were a prophecy. Our feelings are real, but they are not always reliable narrators.
And sometimes anxiety doesn’t disappear the moment we pray. That doesn’t mean we prayed incorrectly or that our faith is weak. Scripture never promises that faithful Christians will never feel anxious, overwhelmed, afraid, or emotionally exhausted. What Scripture does give us is somewhere to go with those feelings. Philippians 4:6–7 tells us to bring our requests to God through prayer and thanksgiving, and it promises that His peace will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The goal isn’t pretending everything is fine. The goal is learning where to turn when everything isn’t fine.
So today, if your heart feels heavy, you don’t have to solve your entire life before breakfast. Bring God what is weighing on you right now. Name it. Pray about it. Open His Word. Talk to someone you trust. And then look around, because someone else may be carrying something heavy too. Maybe today you need the kind word. Maybe today God gives you the opportunity to speak one. Either way, Proverbs 12:25 reminds us that our words matter, our burdens matter, and the God who sees the anxious heart has not left us to carry its weight by ourselves.
QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT
- What has been weighing most heavily on my heart lately?
- When anxiety starts taking over, where do my thoughts usually go first?
- What truths from Scripture can I intentionally use to answer my anxious thoughts?
- Is there someone in my life who may need a kind and encouraging word from me today?
LIFE APPLICATION
Today, identify one specific worry you have been carrying and intentionally give it to God in prayer. Then choose one person to encourage. Send the text, make the call, write the note, or simply tell them something kind and true. You may never know how much that small act mattered.
JOURNAL PROMPT
What am I carrying today that I need to place in God’s hands? What is true about God that I need to remember when anxiety tells me otherwise?
PRAYER
Father, You know every worry I carry, including the ones I struggle to put into words. When anxiety weighs down my heart, help me remember that I do not have to carry everything by myself. Teach me to bring my fears to You instead of allowing them to control my thoughts. Fill my mind with what is true and remind me that You are with me in whatever today brings. Help me also notice the people around me who may be carrying burdens I cannot see. Give me words that are kind, truthful, and encouraging, and use me to remind someone else that they are seen and cared for. Thank You for hearing me, caring for me, and staying with me through every anxious moment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
