Exodus 14:13 (ESV)
“And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.’”
There are moments in life when everything seems to be closing in around us. The problems are too big, the obstacles seem impossible, and every direction we look appears to lead to another dead end. Fear begins whispering that there is no way out. Anxiety convinces us that something terrible is about to happen. And sometimes, despite everything we know about God’s faithfulness, we begin wondering whether He has forgotten about us. But Exodus 14:13 reminds us that what looks impossible to us is never impossible for God.
The Israelites were facing a terrifying situation. Pharaoh and his Egyptian army were pursuing them, the Red Sea stood directly in front of them, and there appeared to be absolutely nowhere to escape. They had just witnessed God deliver them from slavery through extraordinary demonstrations of His power, yet when another frightening situation appeared, their faith began to crumble. They cried out in fear and questioned why Moses had brought them into the wilderness. Isn’t that something we can recognize in ourselves? We can look back and see countless times God has been faithful, yet when a new trial arrives, we sometimes respond as though He has never helped us before.
Moses responded with three powerful instructions: Fear not. Stand firm. See the salvation of the LORD. Notice that Moses did not tell the Israelites to figure out an escape route, develop a battle strategy, or somehow defeat the Egyptian army through their own strength. He directed their attention away from the danger surrounding them and toward the God who had already demonstrated His power. Their deliverance would not come through their abilities, their resources, or their cleverness. It would come through the Lord Himself. The same God who had brought them out of Egypt was perfectly capable of bringing them through the sea.
But there is something important we must understand about standing firm. It does not mean that trusting God always requires us to do absolutely nothing. In fact, just a few verses later, God instructed Moses to tell the Israelites to move forward (Exodus 14:15). Their responsibility was to trust His direction and obey His commands, even when they could not understand how everything would work out. Biblical faith is not passive resignation. It is confident dependence upon God that produces obedience. Sometimes trusting Him means waiting patiently, and sometimes it means taking the next step He has clearly commanded, even when the path ahead seems frightening.
We also need to remember that God’s faithfulness does not mean every difficult situation will end exactly the way we want. God specifically promised the Israelites deliverance from the Egyptians that day, and He fulfilled that promise. We cannot automatically claim that every personal problem will disappear immediately or that every frightening circumstance will have a miraculous earthly ending. What we can trust is God’s unchanging character. He remains sovereign, faithful, wise, and good. He has promised never to abandon His people, and through Jesus Christ, He has provided a salvation far greater than deliverance from an earthly enemy. Our greatest hope is not that life will always become easier, but that our eternal security rests in Him.
Perhaps today you are standing in front of your own Red Sea. Maybe you are facing circumstances you cannot control, decisions you do not know how to make, or fears that seem to grow louder every day. Remember that God does not need you to understand the entire plan before you trust Him. He calls you to stand firm in your faith, obey His Word, and remember who He is. The Israelites could not see the path through the sea until God opened it. And although we are not promised the same miracle, we can trust the same faithful God. Your circumstances may be beyond your control, but they have never been beyond His.

Life Application
When you encounter a situation that causes fear, uncertainty, or anxiety today, resist the temptation to immediately assume the worst. Instead, spend a few moments remembering God’s faithfulness and reminding yourself of what Scripture teaches about His character. Identify what is within your responsibility, what God has commanded you to do, and what you must entrust to His sovereign care. Pray for the courage to obey Him even when the outcome is uncertain. You do not have to know what tomorrow holds to remain faithful to God today.
